There are about five elements of design to consider when thinking of redecorating a space. They are Line, Shape, Space, Colour, and Form.
Interior design is more than just a course taken in school or a profession, it’s a way of life. The art of creating and re-creating, designing and re-designing can be taskful while enjoyable as well. Creating an idea in your head about a space and bringing it into reality takes a lot of creativity. Creativity alone is not enough, one must consider techinal aspwcts to make it work, acquire necessary skills, follow principles, and consider elements.
LINE:
Lines in space help to guide the eye, help define the room and give it stability. There are characteristics of lines: horizontal (from left to right), vertical (from up to down), diagonal (from corner to corner), and curved or dynamic. Applying all these characters of the line helps create and define the shape of a space and makes the definition more efficient. Also, lines can be used to lengthen or shorten a space visually, create patterns, create softness or playfulness, and create geometric designs.
FORM:
Form is shape. The form is any three-dimensional object in space and also includes the shape of the room itself. It can be either natural shapes or geometrical shapes. Geometric shapes are man-made usually on furniture. While natural shapes create an organic feel and evoke a sense of nature.
COLOUR:
Without light, there is no colour. Colour can alter the perceived shape, size and location of an object. It is extremely complex and can change the character and feeling of a space. It can visually bring things closer or make them recede. Colour can also impact our moods. Colour is one of the most fundamental and influential elements of design. There are three dimensions of colour: hue (the name of the colour), value (the lightness or darkness of the colour), and intensity or saturation (its degree of strength or purity).
SPACE:
The space of a room refers to the physical boundaries set by its four walls. Space refers to the distance between and around furniture and objects and their proportion within a room. Getting balance within a room just right relies on using both positive and negative space. Furniture occupies positive space, while empty space constitutes negative space.
SHAPE:
Using lines, colour and texture creates shapes. The basic shapes in interior design are square, rectangular, triangular, circular and organic. When creating a design, shapes can be used to create balance, harmony and rhythm. Shapes can be used to define space, emphasize a focal point, or create a feeling of movement.
